The Setting

Think about a place that's faraway from you, yet must feel so near if life's to be worth living. You probably know the place I mean – you get there so late some nights and wake up, the pillow's wet, the traffic's still grinding by outside...You were just talking to one who's gone, or were you singing?

Maybe now you're on the road to that beautiful place. No Lexus for you: the crumbs are in your hair 'cause the driver, leaning back over the seat to check you, isn't the cleanliest sort. But the wind's in your hair too, as you smile sleepily... can you trust him to get you safely to Santa Cruz?

Now we're here in that beautiful place. In the heart of it as a matter of fact, with our feet in the grass, our thumbs out in the sun, and on- and off-ramps roaring all around us. "You smile, your shoulders bare – who sees us? We don't care!"

Every lot in this town's priced too out of sight for us to pay down, so we'd better keep moving... can our dreams stay incandescent? Others may claim to own everything here, but it’s ours from the inside, we live it to the bone.
